Our Community -
Big Creek is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Fresno, California. Our population is about 175. We sit at an elevation of about 5000 feet, and are surrounded by the beautiful Sierra National Forest. There are two small towns located between Fresno and Big Creek. Shaver Lake and Prather both offer groceries, hardware supplies, dining and other necessities. It takes about an hour and a half to drive into Fresno where most grocery and household items are purchased. The nearest medical and dental facilities are approximately 45 minutes away.
Southern California Edison’s Hydro Electric Project established the town of Big Creek in the early 1900’s. The company has approximately 80-90 employees. Some of the employees live in Big Creek. There is a school in town that serves our community. It is a K-8 elementary with combination classes. Big Creek School has several unique attributes, including a full sized swimming pool, a three lane bowling alley, and a six week ski program in the winter. There is also a preschool on the school campus. The current enrollment (including preschool) is 59. The school has 13 employees. Big Creek has a full service post office, a general store, a volunteer fire department, and a Forest Service station. Newly added is an Airbnb listing - The Inn at Big Creek.
Most of the housing in Big Creek is Southern California Edison employee housing. The rest of the homes are owned by local residents or serve as vacation homes. Opportunities to rent or to buy are few.
